“Jose Yossi
was not born in a painting Atelier, nor is he the son of artists. However, his parents, European immigrants who chose Bahia as their new home, were passionate about art. They where big supporters of the local artists and befriended several of them. Therefore, he grew up living in a house that was like an island surrounded by works of art.
In the 60’s Jose Yossi started as a self-taught artist (which he continues to be until today.) He began learning about paints, brushes, colors, composition, and to nurture his creative instincts. A new artist was born in the vibrant local art scene. In the 90’s he became a proficient artist, skilled in the choice of material he works with (everything from the highest quality), aside from the continuous “remakes” of his paintings. Not because of insecurity, quite the contrary, self-critical of his paintings, scathingly demanding with himself, as befits the true artists.”  -Written by Valdemar Szaniecki Journalist & Marchand Since 1966 Director, “A Galeria” Jose Yossi’s work was selected to feature at the prestigious “A Galeria” in Sao Paolo and we are proud to be representing him for his debut in the United States at Gallery 212 Miami. His show will open Second Saturday, November 12th, 2011 with highlights preparing for the big show during Art Basel Miami 2011 (December 1-4).   Yossi and his wife attended the red carpet Art Basel Miami 2011 Exhibition “Opening Night Gala & Meet the Artists” Presented by Catch Grill & Bar – Marriott Biscayne Bay at Gallery 212 Miami to Benefit the Miami Arts Charter School on November 30th, 2011.

Gallery 212 Miami & Miami Publicist are excited to welcome back a young friend in her debut professional art exhibition kicking off this September 13.   She may have been one of the greatest muses for Gallery 212 Miami resident artist Sean Murdock, FMIA – Images of her taken by Murdock, which he turned into original mixed media art in print, on canvas and on wood, shot out the door as soon as they were ever re-stocked.

Model Kira Alvarado featured in a mural by Gallery 212 Miami Resident Artist Sean Murdock, FMIA.This orignal wheat paste mural resided on the front Gallery 212 Miami wall facing NW 2nd Avenue in Wynwood from 2010-2011. Photo courtesy Steve Fox.

Kira is not only a muse for Murdock, she is nominated as one in a steamy list of candidates for Racked NY’s “Hottest Female Trainer in New York City.”   Clearly past “aspiring” and well on her way to fame and fortune in many endeavors – we wonder how she has time for it all?  She has an extremely full schedule of training and shoots, often having already trained twice before the rest of us in whichever party city we reside (NY, MIA, LA, Vegas…) bat an eyelash.

But with growing success this beautiful artist is humble.  Her pieces are large and meant to make a statement.  They have never been shown in professional exhibition, yet, but she knows that those with an aesthetic eye find them pleasing because they have often been chosen to be placed in short films and on set for several of her shoots.  “I would really just love to see these pieces go to people who fall in love with them” stated Alvarado in reference to her Untitled series of abstract acrylic originals on board with reinforced backings.  The pieces were a challenge to get from NY to Miami, but as in the life of the artist, which Kira is in every sense, it is the struggle and the victory which defines us.

Kira was educated at the New World School of the Arts in Miami where she has an impressive dance resume.  Please keep reading below for more about the artist and a listing of some of her works in exhibition.

Straight out of an exhausting schedule for New York Fashion Week, Ms. Alvarado arrives in Miami just in time to kick back her heals a little and enjoy her fans and her opening alongside some good old friends at the premiere gallery in Wynwood.

Join the buzz and meet Kira as well as a fascinating group of featured artists and gallery friends this weekend at Art Walk.

“Meet the Artist” VIP Champagne Reception 6:30pm Saturday, September 13, 2014 followed by Second Saturday Art Walk at 7pm

The reception is complimentary for artists, collectors, their guests and gallery newsletter subscribers.  To RSVP and register, please email info@gallery212miami.com.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Kira Alvarado is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on modern dance and abstract expressionism. As a female creator, she often uses her body as the subject in her art work and explores its relationship to the viewer through a variety of materials and mediums. Jumping between photography, videography, dance, silk screen & painting, Alvarado’s artistic style is a study in fluidity and motion. By capturing these elements of freneticism and movement, Alvarado is able to exhibit a symphony of corporeal gesture.

ARTIST BIO

Kira Alvarado was born in Cincinnati Ohio into a family of artists and “creatives”. Enrolled in ballet at a young age, Alvarado began exploring her creative practice, designing costumes for her dance performances with the help of her mother, a talented seamstress and fashion designer. Continuing her apprenticeship under the guidance of her older brother, an illustrator and graphic designer, Alvarado learned the techniques of painting and sketching. Alvarado moved to Miami for college and received her BFA at New World School of the Arts. She currently lives and works in New York City.

Artie Sandstone
Artist, Illustrator, Adult and Children’s Book Author

Introducing the whimsical characters in the world of Artie Sandstone!

“Weird is okay, it’s actually great.  In fact it’s the normal that is spooky.”

Born and raised in Miami, Artie Sandstone wasted no time creating characters. Since ever he can remember he has taken great pleasure in making up names, rhyming words and scribbling down characters. Drawing and painting did no fully become a part of his life until about the age of 20.  Since then painting has evolved into a real passion.  What he is really passionate about, even more so than painting, is the creation of new characters that will hopefully make people stop, smile, and say “what in the world?!”.  Many of Sandstone’s pieces are improvised – essentially, letting the finger and/or hand go where it goes – and then developed.  Each work is intended to be free-flowing and care-free while capturing unique and deep expressions in a fun and often simple manner.

Artie Sandstone paints a new series…

Have you seen the new animals series? It’s Schwell!

Artie Sandstone has found new inspiration! The Schwellberries are still on the loose at the gallery and just last month Sandstone introduced his first two children’s books; Wally Schwellberry — Pleased To Meet You and Hey Dude, It’s Time To Eat Your Food.  This December he will present “Los Animales de Sandstone”, the most recent edition to his artistic lineup. The newest series of original works will be presented in exhibition along with collectables, limited edition books and prints, along with stickers and unique merchandise at Gallery 212 Miami.  Merging his signature bright and playful color pallette with a story line is old hat for Sandstone, but nobody does it better… and now he is at it again!  Although not at the zoo, Sandstone’s play on words and his new play on animals combine to entertain art lovers of all ages.

For over thirty years, Marvin (Murf) Murphy has used his keen sense of color, design and form, to create dynamic images which evoke inspiration and appeal to the senses. Murf’s multi-dimensional, mixed media pieces have gained him recognition and popularity on an international level.

In 1990, Murf copyrighted and published his first lithographs. This Art Deco Jazz Series was first introduced at the 1991 New York Art Expo. Since that time, Murf has published many more popular designs. Many of these images are well known through the use of art festival posters as well as album and magazine covers. Many of Murf’s designs have been added to the collections of famous jazz musicians and other public figures, which include Dave Sanborn, Richard Elliot, Kenny Rankin, Dave Koz and President Clinton. Murf’s “Earth Island” piece is featured on the PBS “Jim Brickman Beautiful World” special.

In 2006, Murf was invited to the most prestigious diplomatic event of the year, the United Nations Ambassadors’ Ball. This event was a special farewell celebration in honor of U. N. Secretary-General and Nobel Peace Prize winner Kofi Annan, held at Cipriani in New York City. Murf’s original painting “In a Perfect World” was the feature piece for this event. In 2010, Murf presented the new U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon with his “Earth Island” lithograph.

Murf claims many of the inspirations of his art can be attributed to his love of nature, music and science. Over the years, Murf has been deeply involved in many environmental projects. His designs have raised substantial amounts of money for environmental, educational and social causes. Murf has shared the limelight with many celebrities including Ivana Trump, Pamela Anderson and Bob Barker, at many of these fundraising events. Vice President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore has expressed his appreciation to Murf’s commitment for the preservation and protection of our environment.

Today, Murf’s work is being recognized by collectors all over the world. His new age style and distinctive art form has led to his great success. Murf’s work can now be seen in prominent galleries and exhibitions across the country.

Paper Laine
ARTIST IN EXHIBITION, SUMMER 2014

I left my heart in Texas
Original Paperwork on Framed Mirror.  3.5×3.5″  $150

Recent graduate of the Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota, Florida, Dallas, Texas native Gracie Kennedy is emerging quickly. She is a true artisan who is honing her craft by putting to work a combination of skills and experience including a BFA in illustration alongside bookmaking, hand sewing and paper engineering. The results are discovered in the evolving Paper Laine brand.

AustinEguia_MadebyEvent2014_GracieKennedy_085 AustinEguia_MadebyEvent2014_GracieKennedy_006

Following a solo show at Madeby Gallery in Sarasota, the most popular pieces of the artist’s original series – some of them reworked, all of them unique – have arrived to debut on the Miami market.

Neither the work nor the message can be contained by the frames which have often inspired the artist into their very creation. Sculptures burst through the walls, spill to the floor and reflect upon themselves in a body of work that is pop-up by design and pop culture by nature and story.

Penelope
Artist in Exhibition Summer, 2014
ARTIST’S BIO

Penelope FINAL Bio Pic
Penelope and her architectures
on natural materials

Penelope, art name of Chiara Cocchi, is a well known Italian artist, whose art is famous for concentrating on the most important issue of our century: the RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MANKIND AND NATURE.

In her last works, the drawings on driftwood, the artist depicts landscapes and architectures of Florida, with the eyes of the curious traveler, using natural materials found on her way through woods, in the beaches, just walking in barefeet.

Penelope has oriented her vision to a globalized level, in order to link all cultures to the concept of being sons of the same seed. As a great visionnaire traveller, the artist experiences the links between all men, instead of seeing their differences.

“The Artist is Ulysses when she travels and fills her eyes with wonder.

She turns into Penelope when she closes the door of her studio

and turns that wonder into art.”

Penelope sews her stories with her travels around the world. Travelling is for the adult like feeling to find new incredible discoveries every day, just like the child. The artist is always compared to a grown-up child, because the artist is able to feel the wonder of the first time discovery with the eyes of the child.

Images of forests from all around the world, pictures of great impact and energy, depict men and women in fusion with nature. They sleep among the roots of the trees, on the boughs, and on the grass. They become one thing with Nature.

Carol Reeves

©2013 Carol Reeves South Florida Cypress Series; “Orange” Oil on Canvas 48×60

New Arrivals!  Her hugely popular South Florida Cyrpess Trees Series is how Artist Carol Reeves chooses to escape the mundane and the traditional when painting with oil and pure pigments on canvas.  The gallery welcomes new arrivals of Reeves’ most stunning pieces yet, in colors like orange and magenta.  Her renditions, heightened with deep shadows and great detail, give the viewer the real sensation of the lush Cypress forests of South Florida.  Did you know that there are more Cypress trees in Florida than in any other state?  They have natural buttresses (think medieval cathedral architecture).  “Many pass by and see a tangled mess of grays.  I, however, find these trees extremely exciting.  If you see with your mind and not your eyes, all things become possible.  I see the tall and short, the fat and thin, the push and pull.  These living pieces of wood use all of their energy to reach for the sky.  Enter into the equation atmospheric conditions.  The morning sun, the evening sunset, the misty mornings and the foggy days.  By pushing these colors into a new dimension, I open the doors to glorious color and a kaleidoscopic effect.” – Carol Reeves

©2013 Carol Reeves South Florida Cypress Series; “Blue II” Oil on Canvas 48×60

Artist Carol Reeves steps away from her roots in traditional oil painting to actively portray the beauty of the South Florida Cypress trees in her multi-colored series.  With each stroke of vibrant color, she brings the oldest and most prolific trees of South Florida to life.  Representing strength unlike any other naturally occurring element, the trees are also the artist’s release from the captivity one may feel while following the rules, techniques and teachings of art schools.  Having studied under some of the best mentoring artists of our time, Reeves says painting the South Florida Cypress tree series in magenta, yellow and electric blue has been a most liberating experience.

FEATURED ARTIST, GALLERY 212 MIAMI Summer 2012 & Spring 2014

“Two breathtaking Art Deco Sculptures and a multi-colored gold-leaf work on canvas, all with embellishments such as 23k Gold and Swarovski crystal, have arrived at Gallery 212 Miami for a limited engagement!” – Miami Publicist, April 2014

Inspiration for the Deco Diva by Milo Ligons

Deco Diva is inspired by pure passion and love for a lost era during which the artist believes elegance and self-respect were valued above all. The Diva’s eyes tell of a time, not too long ago, when patience and care stood most dear to the heart. It was the Roaring 20’s! Refined locomotives, steam ships, planes and powerful cars took to life. This was a time when boys were educated to become gentlemen and girls matured to carry themselves like ladies. In the midst of all of this growth one of the most captivating and mesmerizing little girls was born and discovered in a Paris Art Exhibition in 1925. For the last several decades Deco Diva has been getting her beauty sleep and awakes in the present from her slumber. She is ready to show the world her transformation at the hands of artist Milo Ligons. Inspired by the late Josephine Baker, Milo Ligons has embellished the Diva with a 23k gold leafing and Swarovski crystals. The luxurious and fine embellishments are combined with a unique technique of applying acrylic paint, resulting in the “dazzling of the psyche” as the artist hopes to evoke lust, envy, enigma, and amazement from those who behold her beauty.

Artist Dominique R. “Josa” Josaphat

Summer 2012 Special Exhibition

(born 1981) is a Haitian American surrealist painter from Miami.  She graduated from Miami Central High School in 2000 where her artistic talents were recognized. She won awards such as first place in a regional competition for her original poster design for the nationally recognized ad and awareness campaign “Mothers against Drunk Driving” (M.A.D.D.).  The artist attended Johnson & Wales University, studying Sports and Entertainment Business Management before leaving to pursue her true calling in art and re-starting her education at Miami-Dade College where she is currently earning her degree in graphic design.

Josaphat’s artwork is defined by bold, deep, heavy and emotion provoking strokes and imagery.  She draws influence from Picasso and Frida Kahlo while Caribbean cultural traditions are important to the artist and show in the subjects and series of her debut exhibition.  Gallery 212 Miami and Miami Publicist are excited to present a bright young talent and to enable her to show big in her own home town.

An artist with such great ties to her cultural roots can really be appreciated for her vivid imagination and creativity translated to acrylic on canvas and resulting in large, colorful, exuberant pieces.  We look forward to bringing continuing artist news and announcements of new paintings to you as Josa’s career evolves. Exhibition May 12, 2012 – August 1, 2012
