Antonio Bonilla
El Salvador, 1954
Techniques:
Paintings, drawing, engraving, sculpture. Paints in oil, acrylic and water color on canvas or wood. Draws in ink or pencil. Produces xylography over neolite and sculpts on stone covered with gold or silver laminate.

Antonio Bonilla, with a formal education in architecture, was already a master artist by the beginning of the Bonilla sensation. In 1974 he started the well-known group “El Primer Post-Art” (the first post-art) together with artists Dagoberto Reyes and Ricardo Ramírez. Their technique was identified as the mixing of a deep message with confrontational undertones expressed in colors and strokes. As such, Bonilla’s composition boasts bright, bold colors and figures distorted in satirical criticism of society in the way that the artist perceives it to be. Influences ranging from pre-Colombo to expressionism and surrealism stand out in the works. In 2010 the ‘International Museum of Salarrué Exhibitions’ presented a retrospective of the artist. Perfect for museums and private collectors alike, Bonilla painting is the perfect reminder of the distinct wealth of the last 30 to 40 years in the history of art.
