Ilie Vaduva

Featured Artist :: Summer – Fall, 2015

Ilie Vaduva is a contemporary artist.  Born in Romania in 1979, he started drawing and painting as a child attending art school at an early age.  He moved on to study mural painting at the local high school of art and then enrolled in graphic art studies at the Art University in Timisoara. Since graduation the artist has completed extensive work as a decorative and mural painter in both contemporary and traditional styles and has participated in a number of group shows in his native country.  He emigrated in 2009 to Chicago, Illinois, USA and currently resides in Decatur, Illinois.

Since 2009 Vaduva developed and perfected his signature mixed media technique that combines transparent layers of oil colors and pen with white ink on canvas. His art combines classic painting techniques with surrealistic concepts and violent contrasts of light and dark, where darkness becomes a dominating feature of the image. Depth and drama of his images are highlighted throughout in a spotlight effect. He had his first personal show in the United States in February 2015 in Decatur, IL.

“I have a broad range of experience with different media. I found certain ones more exciting then others. But there was a leitmotif : to create a well rounded artwork. I combined different techniques to obtain the most shades,textures and a dramatic contrast.  A non- conventional touch of classicism on a surrealist environment, that is how I would describe my art work.”

Technique
Mixed media that combines graphic accents (pen, ink) with transparent layers of oil on canvas. The accents of the pen can be found in the thickness of the lines and in the points that develop the texture. In between the textures, the ink, going from transparent to opaque, create the focus point. The color is created by layers of transparent oil. The tones are developed in subtle transition to the dark background creating depth.
Concept
The name of this cycle of works is Ego vs. Alter Ego. It graphically describes scenes in which characters meet their own distorted image, personalized by mythological animals, chess pieces or a mix of the two. There is a constant metamorphosis between the Ego and the Alter Ego.
