“When people purchase my artwork, I feel honored and flattered. I want them to know that they are buying a piece of my soul and helping me support my art career. It is a great feeling.” Wen-Ju Chien
Original items for sale by Wenjuice, LLC include magnets, crop tops, original drawings in ink on paper or marker on canvas and more, including her popular, hand-drawn and stamped greeting cards with little quips such as “Sorry if I was a pain in the butt” or “You smell but I still love you” alongside renderings of the artist’s endearing, signature poo character. Price range $1 – $100+
“I want to help young and emerging artists know that it is possible to do art full time if they commit to it and do not give up. It is tough but it is possible.”
Why poo?! “No one draws poo around here so I took dibs. It makes people laugh. Sometimes people take things so seriously. I am moved by the way art has the power to move people.” Wen-Ju has taken this sentiment even further with Stooly a Super Health Heroes character, conceived by the artist when she participated in creating a comic coloring book for children with cancer. The project was part of a program to encourage sick children to submit to some of the more unpleasant tests required for monitoring their health.
Metallic paint and childish cartoon characters also mark the work; Wen-Ju’s creatures and environments are all inspired by real life experiences and people. The drawings are childish, but they do not do childlike things. Drawn in narrative scenarios there is a strong self-portraiture and presence within them. “This is me. I think alot. I draw my feelings. I am in and out of my head, like the tentacles…” she says, pointing to one of her original ink drawings on paper (see sketch, below).
Chien meets the required qualities of the artisans in the Alley by making her wares locally, by hand and all from scratch. She states “…it is just faster this way and I enjoy the learning process in every project.” Wenjuice is enjoying a steadily increasing following and growing success. She was invited to the recent Comic Con in Tampa, FL and will also attend Animate Miami and Wizard World Comic Con Ft. Lauderdale in October. The Wynwood Alley is Wen-Ju’s favorite place to call home as it is a more intimate environment, she says, peole regularly recognize her and now many more fans know that they can find her there.
